A consistent sleep schedule, a calmer bedroom and better timing of screens, caffeine and activity can improve the conditions for restful sleep.

In this guide
  • Set a steady schedule
  • Prepare the room
  • Time food, caffeine and screens
  • Get help for persistent problems

Set a steady schedule

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep, although personal needs vary. Go to bed and get up at similar times each day, including weekends, so your body receives a clear rhythm.

Prepare the room

Keep the bedroom quiet, relaxing and comfortably cool. Dim bright light in the evening and reserve the bed for sleep when possible.

Time food, caffeine and screens

  • Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening if it affects your sleep.
  • Avoid a very large meal just before bed and stay active during the day.
Improve one part of your evening routine at a time. Consistency matters more than creating a perfect night immediately.

Get help for persistent problems

Seek medical advice if sleep difficulty continues, affects daytime safety, or includes loud snoring, choking or gasping, unusual movements, severe anxiety or low mood.

Do not combine sedating products with prescription medicines or alcohol without advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
