Support metabolic health

Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, appropriate portions and maintaining a healthy weight can help lower the risk of fatty liver disease. Make gradual changes that fit your daily life.

Be careful with medicines

Use prescription and over-the-counter medicines only as directed. Tell your clinician about every herbal product and supplement because some ingredients can affect the liver or interact with treatment.

Avoid liver stressors

  • Avoid alcohol, especially if liver tests are abnormal or liver disease is diagnosed.
  • Do not combine several products with overlapping ingredients.
  • Choose properly labelled products and check expiry and storage instructions.
A product labelled “natural” is not automatically harmless to the liver.

Follow up abnormal results

Do not ignore yellowing of the eyes or skin, very dark urine, persistent swelling, severe right-sided abdominal pain, vomiting blood, confusion or abnormal liver tests. Seek qualified medical care.

Liver disease may have few early symptoms. Diagnosis and monitoring require appropriate medical assessment and tests.
